Ono 2.0
The Ono is a historical design based on traditional axes in Japan. Ono is the Japanese word for axe. (I got super creative on this one).
One of the more distinctive features of this design is the lack of a poll, which is the primary reason this design barely tips the scales at 1 lb. It also puts the center of balance in front of the handle and minimizes the risk of any pull outs due to weight.
The beard of the axe is 2inches thick at the base to reduce the risk of losing points due to the axe being buried too deeply in the board.
Aug 15, 2023 Update: I've been updating the molds / designs for many of my axes recently and decided it was finally time the Ono got some love. The biggest change is that I've flattened the eye across the bottom. This will make hanging and removing handles much easier. I also reduced the size and spread of the grooves along both sides. This has the overall impact of bumping the weight of the axe by 0.1lbs.
The most distinctive feature of this design however are the grooves along both sides of the axe. When researching Japanese axes, I noticed that most had 3 or 4 grooves along the side of the blade. When trying to figure out why this was, I stumbled onto a legend of a forester in ancient Japan. In the legend, the forester is out and about when he encounters a nature spirit in the form of a bear. The spirit is stuck in a bear trap by one of his claws. After begging the forester to free him, the forester decides to free the spirit by chopping off the toe that was stuck. In gratitude, the bear blesses the forester's axe by dragging his claws along both sides of the axe, leaving 4 grooves on one side and 3 on the other.
I loved this story so much I decided to incorporate the grooves into my design.
By default, this axe comes with a single handle. Additional handles can be purchased here.
As an Infinity Axes special, this design incorporates a pinned handle design that allows for rapid replacement of handles. The socket measures 1.25 inches x 0.75 inches with 1/4 inch radius corners. You can choose to purchase additional handles with your axe head. Regardless of choice we will also include a high strength roll-pin that will require the use of a punch to insert / remove. The hole for the roll pins is 1/4inch in diameter, in our experience the roll pin, provides the best balance of strength and ease of replacement.
Please remember that when you place an order, you are getting in the production queue. Expect 3-8 weeks for delivery. Feel free to contact me directly for a better estimate on the timeline.
