Scrappy the Edge Guard
Not providing sheaths for my axes was a strategic decision on my part when starting up based on lack of skills, resources, time and keeping my prices down.
I do recognize the need though and finally had the time to come up with what I consider to be an acceptable "alternative" in the form of a wood block held in place using double sided Velcro.
It starts with big axe handles that would otherwise go to scrap because of router blow outs. That's typically 30" of stick ruined by a 4-5" blemish too big to be sanded out. I've carved a 1/4" wide by 1/2' deep chanel in them using the table saw and then chop it down into 5" pieces. Then using furniture tacks I've attached two 20" strips of double sided Velcro to provide the ability to adjust the fit to any axe you'd like.
These should fit any hatchet or big axe that I make and most other axes as well.
In fairness to those that like to "customize" I can also ship you just the pieces so you can stain, burn, oil, or etch the wood before attaching the Velcro.
